Withdrawal Policy

Cal Poly allows students to withdraw from a class between the end of the regular add/drop period and the end of the seventh week of instruction “only if there are serious and compelling reasons for withdrawal in the judgment of the department head.” Between the end of the 7th week of instruction and the last day of instruction, “withdrawals are permitted only if the withdrawal is based on an emergency situation clearly beyond the control of the student.”[1]

It is the policy of Counseling Services to provide documentation for either class or term withdrawals only when we have some knowledge of the student/client and believe we can accurately assess the validity of the request to withdraw.

In some limited cases, such as situations involving highly sensitive issues, Counseling Services may also provide documentation, however, only upon referral from the Dean or Advising Center.
